The drive from Portland to Eugene was about two hours long, but in the predawn darkness, with the hops and lettuce rows flanking the highway fluttering like shadowy wings on either side, the distance seemed to race by quickly. The headlights carved a ten-foot swath into the asphalt ahead, and the dinosaurs of the eighteen-wheelers occasionally heaved into view. Before I knew it my coffee was gone, and soon after that the sky was brightening around Salem. I blew by a Volkswagen poking along in the fast lane and came up on the mud flaps of a laboring Peterbilt. The laser beams of my headlights melted the back tires and on the way past the cab I tossed in a few mental grenades for good measure. Back on the open road I aimed my mental flamethrower at the silhouettes of poplar trees and electrical towers appearing in the growing daylight, incinerating them with the merest thoughts.
